Cane and Raj Strokeplay Champions
The 2021 Wellington 72 Hole Strokeplay was held at a superbly presented Waikanae golf course and facilities.
Under Level 2 guidelines, DotGolf, Golf Wellington and Covid Tracer App "triple check in" for players, caddies and spectators scanned in , masks and sanitising, and a "cyber" results and prizegiving, stunning Saturday weather and a breezy Sunday saw some great golf played.
Jonno Cane added to his previous title wins, holding off overnight leader Matt Morris and the fast finishing Tyler Hodge from the Man/Wang team and Jayden Ford, by 2 shots, with a -4, 280, four round total. Young local players Caerwyn Ross and Dominic Hazeldine played well on the first day, earning spots in the final group for Sunday, Ross going on to finish 5th.
Manawatu/Wanganui No.1 Tara Raj was fast out of the blocks in round 1 with a -4 course record 70, and built on this lead to take a 7 shot advantage into the final round over local favourite Darae Chung. Darae proceeded to scorch around the front 9, 5 under and reducing the lead to 2 shots, coming home in a course record -5, Raj holding her composure to match Chung's birdie on the final hole and win by a shot.
