Boulcotts Farm Look To Go One Better

In a repeat of last year’s showdown, Boulcott’s Farm will take on defending champions Manor Park in this weekend’s Women’s premier final for the Lansdowne Trophy.

The Lansdowne Trophy, symbol of Women’s golf supremacy in the region, is played over 36 holes, foursomes (pairs alternate shots) in the morning followed by singles in the afternoon, and will be competed for on Royal Wellington Golf Club’s Championship layout.

The club in conjunction with the R & A and Augusta National, is in the final few months preparation for the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship later in the year, the World’s leading Amateur event, being staged in New Zealand for the first time.

In a big year for golf events at Royal Wellington, the Wellington region and New Zealand in general, CEO Kurt Greve and his team are looking forward to hosting this event on Saturday.

Boulcott’s Farm, the beaten finalists in 2016, have the core of last year’s team playing again, led by current provincial players Erika Cui, Shontalia William and captain Alannah Braybrook.

Braybrook feels that her team have developed significantly since last year, Cui and William even at their young age, taking a major leadership role in the team at the top of the order. Sue Faulke, Annemarie Verster and Michelle Huang make up the balance of a strong looking side. Braybrook feels that a key part of the team’s success this year, preliminary round winners in the lead up to the finals, is their desire to “get it done for each other”. Significant in the development of the team has been BFHGC professional Alastair Sidford’s input and management of the group this season.

Standing in Boulcott’s way are the defending champs Manor Park, lead by provincial No.1 Gabrielle Palado and captained by provincial masters player, Jennie Hewett.

Manor Park have always had a strong Women’s group at the club and this continues to develop with younger players Mia Scrimgeour and Imogen Donnelly-Lawrence in their team along with experienced campaigners Judy Randell and Maree Gates. Like Boulcott’s Farm, 5 of the side were in last year’s final.

Captain Hewett is very pleased with the team's results to date, beating Shandon in the semi-final in a close fought match last weekend, and believes their experience in both last year’s final and in terms of the many seasons competitive play her players have under their belts, will hold Manor Park in good stead.

The key to the match in Hewett’s mind “will be the morning foursomes” and this view is certainly supported by last year’s result; a 2 – 1 morning lead with all 6 singles matches in the afternoon being clear cut, 3 to each team.

The final tees off at 7.30am, with the singles matches set to go at 11.44am.
