Wellington Golf Names Representative Teams
Wellington Golf has just announced several teams to play in upcoming representative matches.
Following the completion of the Wellington 72 Hole Strokeplay and the Wellington Under 19 Strokeplay, the selectors have chosen teams for the Shand Cup, Shand Salver and Sybil Green Quadrangular tournament this coming weekend in Levin vs. Hawkes Bay, Taranaki and Manawatu/Wanganui. Also this weekend a Masters team has been chosen to play Manawatu/Wanganui at Royal Wellington.
This is followed by the Tasman Quadrangular Tournament at Marlborough on the 15th and 16th October vs. Tasman, Canterbury and North Harbour.
Finally the team for the National Interprovincial, Diners Club Freyberg Masters for players over 40, at Dunedin beginning on the 31st October has been released.
The Shand and Sybil teams are near full strength, with only leading players Daniel Hillier and Te Rongapai Clay being unavailable due to other commitments. Jonno Cane’s win in the Strokeplay and Kerry Mountcastle’s 3rd place at the Charles Tour Taranaki Open provide in form leadership at the top of the Men’s Senior team who are looking to continue on with their unbeaten run in 2016, having accounted for Hawkes Bay, Manawatu/Wanganui and Auckland thus far
The team for the Tasman event the following weekend features several players who through good results in the Strokeplay get the opportunity to push on for higher honours later in the year. A clash of dates with the national calendar, will see Daniel Hillier playing in Christchurch defending his Charles Tour title at the Harewood Open, along with 3 of last year’s Toro players – Jonno Cane, Kerry Mountcastle and Ben Slaven. In Jonno Cane’s absence this team will be captained by Elton Nicholson.
The 1st of the 3 Interprovincial teams Wellington Golf will name for the end of year events, the Men’s Masters, features a couple of new faces in a strong looking side. The side will be lead and captained by Elton Nicholson in his Masters debut, with another new face former Men’s Senior Rep player Shandon’s Mark Whalen also making his debut at the Freyberg. NZ Seniors National Champ runner up Malcolm Gullery, the experienced and well performed Frank Borren and Martin Webber, and Manor Park’s John Warrington who has competed at previous Masters events, round out the team of 6.
Convener of Selectors John Spraggs is very pleased with results so far, the various teams gelling well in their outings this year. He is equally delighted that the WGI Academy system is producing so many players that the selectors are able to look at with a view towards Toro Interprovincials and long term, 2017 and beyond. –ENDS--
