Clutch Kiwis in College Championship

New Zealand's Wenyung Keh and Julianne Alvarez were part of history this afternoon as their US College team, The Washington Huskies won the NCAA Golf Championship for the first time in history.

Much like their semi final, there was no shortage of drama with an 18th hole chip in from Ying Luo which sent the Huskies and the gallery into roars as they thought it was enough to take the win.

However, it was left to Julianne Alvarez to take centre stage and finish her match off before they had finally achieved what no other Huskies team has done before.

Alvarez was forced down the final hole after being dormie three and then into an intense playoff. 

Alvarez showed signs of nerves as her tee shot sprayed left before making two amazing up and downs to win the playoff and send her team into screams, tears and a lot of embracing.   

"I don't think if you told me that this was what I was in for that I would have believed you, it’s just been a whirlwind of a freshman year and I couldn't have scripted it any better!" Grinned Alvarez.

Earlier in the afternoon Auckland's Keh made light work of her match, showing class by winning 4 and 3 which meant she could only sit and watch as the final came down to the wire. It was also her freshman year and not for one second did it look that way with such an amazing final day performance.  

The two have had a week to remember and this will do wonders for their golfing careers.

The Washington Huskies are now the NCAA Champions for the first time in history and there was a nice Kiwi flavour to it.
