Daniel Hillier contributes to NZ's winning of Claire Higson trophy in Tasmania

New Zealand Triumphant in Claire Higson Trophy

The New Zealand boys team of Daniel Hillier, Henry Spring, Inia Logan and Harry Hillier was triumphant in the Claire Higson trophy in Tasmania today.  

First played for in 1982 the trophy was relaunched this year to be played as a team’s stroke play event during the first two rounds of the Australian Boys Amateur Championship.

In addition to the Claire Higson Trophy the girls equivalent the Junior Trans-Tasman trophy was also reinstated under the same format, with the New Zealand junior girls team of Momoka Kobori, Amelia Garvey, Alanna Campbell and Ela Grimwood being defeated by the Aussies.

The New Zealand boys team was spearheaded by Henry Spring and Daniel Hillier. Spring who is lying in a tie for first with two rounds to go shot 68 and 72 while Hillier was a shot back with a 70 and 71.

With three of the best four scores counting Inia Logan had two counting scores with rounds of 74 and 75, with the team not requiring Harry Hillier’s rounds of 77 and 76. The New Zealand teams final total was 430 a comfortable 11 shots better than the young Aussies.

While the team trophy is in the bag Hillier and Spring will be looking to emulate Tyler Hodge’s victory in 2012 during the final two rounds tomorrow.

In the Junior Trans-Tasman event the Aussie women were dominant despite Canterbury’s Momoka Kobori’s best efforts. After two rounds Kobori lies in a tie for second in the overall championship sitting at an impressive 11 under par. While Amelia Garvey (70 & 75) and Alannah Campbell (72 & 75) were able to provide solid support the Aussie junior girls were good finishing the two rounds on a score of 412 an incredible 32 shots under par.

Kobori and the other kiwi girls will now turn their attention to the remaining two rounds of the individual event culminating with 36 holes tomorrow.
