Toro Day 1. Wellington make the most of their first match.
Wellington, who finished third at the North Shore last year, also made the most of their only match today.
The most successful team in the history of the competition, who last won the title in 2010, opened with a convincing 5 - 0 win over Hawkes Bay to underline their title credentials.
Thomas Spearman-Burn, a former New Zealand Amateur Champion, won his match 2 and 1. He said the Wellington team is feeling good about their chances this week.
“We have a solid team and we’ve got off to a good start which always helps,” said the 25-year-old from Miramar Golf Club.
“We came into today pretty relaxed and all the boys played pretty well. Brayden Mazey was a standout, he was six-under today to win 3 and 2.
“This is a bloody good course and it sets up well for matchplay. We are looking forward to tomorrow where we face North Harbour which should be a tough match.”
The Toro NZ Men’s Interprovincial is a team’s matchplay contest with the top five golfers from the 15 provinces around New Zealand competing over seven rounds.
There are two divisions based on the previous year’s results and the final day of the event there are semi-finals and a final to decide the champion.
