World Junior Golf Championship: Kiwis off the pace in Canada
New Zealand has made a disappointing start to the inaugural World Junior Golf Championship in Canada.
The Kiwis combined for a 12-over par round one total at the Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ontario to be 16th out of the 16 teams competing at the event.
They will begin round two 19 shots back from the United States of America who leads the event by seven shots after dominant performances from Megan Khang (67) and Mika Liu (70) on day one.
Auckland amateur Wenyung Keh was the best of the Kiwis when she carded a four-over par 76 and Wellington No.1 Julianne Alvarez, who recently represented NZ at the Espirito Santo Worlds Team Championship, had an eight-over par 80 as the other counting score.
Bay of Plenty rep Alanna Campbell, who is on debut for New Zealand, had the non-counting nine-over par 81 in the format where the best two out of three scores count towards the team total.
The competition is open to female juniors who have not reached their 19th birthday by the last scheduled day of the championship, October 1, 2014 and who are members in good standing with their respective golf federation and who are not playing university or college golf.
Sixteen countries are participating in the inaugural World Junior Girls Championship with teams being selected based on their finish at the 2012 World Amateur Team Championship in Turkey.
