Men Win Shand Cup, Women Place 2nd in Sybil Green Salver
The Wellington Men's and Women's Teams competed at the annual quadrangular event in Wanganui at the Castlecliff GC, against Taranaki, Manawatu/Wanganui and Hawkes Bay, for the Shand Cup and Sybil Green Salver.
In the Men's event, Wellington opened with a good 5 - 3 win over Taranaki, followed up Saturday afternoon with a very good 6 - 2 result over Manawatu/Wanganui and finished the weekend off on Sunday with a commanding 7 - 1 win over Hawkes Bay, to lift the Shand Cup for a 6th year in a row.
Highlights were 3 out of 3 wins by Matt Pegg and Oli Newman, and 2 wins and a half by Jonno Cane, Peter Spearman-burn, and Trey Shedlock.
In the Sybil Green Salver, Wellington opened with a great 7 - 1 win over Taranaki, then a 3 - 5 loss to Man/Wang, and on Sunday after a good lead in 7 games through the middle of the round, a late rally by Man/ Mang saw the match finish 4 point each, denying Wellington the 5 - 3 result needed for the trophy win, finishing 2nd ahead of Man/Wang and Taranaki, Hawkes Bay triumphing for the 1st time in 7 years. Highlights for Wellington were Elise Barber and Toaiva Faafia, both on debut, having 3 out of 3 wins.
