Alvarez & Keh make College Final
Yesterday we saw Kiwis, Julianne Alvarez and Wenyung Keh star for the Washington Huskies at the Eugene Country Club to help advance the Huskies into their first NCAA Golf Championship final in US College history.
Alvarez struck first as she defeated Bethany Wu 1-up in a back and forth match. Alvarez set the crowd alight with a massive birdie putt on the 16th to take a lead she wouldn’t relinquish and earn the first point for the passionate Huskies side.
With back to back Kiwi girls earning a point, Washington’s lead quickly jumped to 2-0 as Keh defeated Hadas Libman 2 and 1. Keh led the majority of the way until the back nine where the lead changed hands but Keh then recorded a vital birdie on 17 to take the match in clinical fashion.
From here the two could only watch as the deciding match went into a playoff where the drama unfolded. Huskie Sarah Rhee who trailed by three holes at one stage then fought back to take it to the 19th. Her approach shot was a clear sign of nerves as she found the right hand trap. The freshman from Seattle then hit the biggest shot of the day and her career, as she holed out from the bunker after the ball struck the pin and dropped in the cup, clinching the match for the Huskies.
Washington will face returning National Champion’s Stanford in the final on as the Huskies seek their first National Championship in history.
The best part for New Zealand golf fans is that there is live coverage of the event on Sky Sports Pop-Up channel so you can see the drama unfold from 10am today.
