It’s been an exciting few months in the lives of a number of the National Academy members. For Josh Munn, Tae Koh, James Beale and Vaughan McCall its been the stuff of boyhood dreams. All four players have transitioned to the paid ranks, now playing for pay as professional golfers.
At the same time four academy members have taken up U.S College scholarships, expanding their golfing experience while working towards their higher education.
Julianne Alvarez and Wenyung Keh have settled into life at the University of Washington, Denzel Ieremia has taken up a scholarship at Iowa State and Brooke Hamilton is set to join them states side next month, Brooke will head to the University of Oregon. These departures, along with Kadin Neho deciding to take some time away from competitive golf has left some big shoes to fill in the national body’s player development programme.
With the New Zealand summer/ autumn tournament programme just getting underway, and following the departure of the players above, there will be a lot to play for over the coming months. Players will be playing for both a place in the National Academy as well as selection into the World Amateur Teams Champions squads that will travel to Mexico in September.
Prior to the yearly renaming of the National Academy, which will follow the season ending Muriwai Open in early May, three players have been promoted from their respective district programmes to National Academy members.
Daniel Hiller, Luke Brown and Momoka Kobori all travelled to Australia in January as part of New Zealand golf squads and acquitted themselves well. They will take up various national and international playing opportunities prior to the May renaming and as such have earnt an early call up to the Academy.
