Brayden Mazey leads NZ U19 Championship

Wellington representative Brayden Mazey set the early lead on the first day of the NZ U19 Mens Championship at Harewood GC in Christchurch earlier today. Brayden fired a 1 over par 73 in a cold, wet southerly that never saw the temperature rise above 7 degrees to finish the day in a share of  the lead with Aucklands George Helsby.

The conditions were so tough that only just over a 1/4 of the159 strong field managed to better 80 on the Greg Turner designed layout.

Daniel Hillier was the next best Wellington Golfer, carding a 5 over 77 for a share of 16th place going into tomorrows 2nd round, before the cut.

Over at the Womens U19 Championship, played at nearby templeton GC, Julianne Alvarez sits in a share of 3rd place after shooting a 2 over par 75, 2 shots behind the leaders at even par. Fellow Manor Park member Gabrielle Palado is 2 shots further back in a share of 8th.

Weather conditions were simirlarly bad with play suspended through the middle of the day when the greens flooded, but extra squeegees sent in from Russley GC and hard work from the green staff and volunteers managed to get them playable and allow the finish of play.
