The Marwell Cup 2014 – Match Report
The Marlborough team playing against the Wellington selection, for the Marwell Cup at the Fairhall G.C. in Blenheim last weekend, looked similar to last year’s team, when they halved their match 12½ each at Shandon. So it was with some trepidation (as only 2 Wellington players had played at Fairhall before) that the Wellington lads turned up on Friday afternoon for a practice round. The course was wet and played tight and long.
On Saturday morning Wellington arrived at the course alone at 7.15am in a heavy frost & confronted a delayed start to 9.00am. Extremely frosty conditions meant a sluggish start to the foursomes by both teams. At the ½ way mark the matches were evenly placed with a possible 3-2 split to Wellington likely. However in increasingly improving sunny weather Wellington pulled their socks up and came home strongly with their Captain Thomas Spearman-Burn and Jonathan Cane wining the last 2 holes for a 1 up win to give wellington a 4-1 morning advantage.
That momentum continued into the afternoon reverse singles, especially an outstanding performance by Jonno, who was 5 under for 12 holes to beat the Marlborough number one, Steve McCaa by 8/6. The Wellington number 3, Daniel Hillier, on his birthday, also was 2 under in dispatching Blair Bevan by 7/6. The Wellington team were obviously enjoying the Marlborough G.C. and it’s warm and sunny playing conditions, to surge ahead with 8 wins, a half and just one loss.
The singles on Sunday started at first light (luckily with no frost) and Wellington continued its strong form with jonno again a 6/5 winner, and Darin Hiroki & Matt Spraggs anchoring the team both winning by 4/3. Although 4 games went to the last green, Wellington got the better of these matches to finish with 7½ of the 10 points on offer, and comfortably won the tie to retain the Marwell Cup by 20 points to 5.
The Marlborough team, with its 5 Master players, said they were again looking forward to competing for the Marwell Cup in Wellington, at the same time next year.
